The resort is built on a south-facing alpine bench at about 1800 metres, above the old village of Huez (1500 metres), which is itself near the top of the famous 21 bend mountain road. Forty miles down this road lies the regional capital of Grenoble. The nearest airport of note is Lyons, although we got there via Geneva.

A closer look at the village shows the large hotel complexes, small shopping centre and, in the background, the altiport, where aircraft land going 20 degrees uphill! A whole network of these frightening termini serve the region. A small gondola lift connects Huez with Alp d'Huez with a large car park nearby.

There are three small retail areas in Alp d'Huez; this one runs up the main approach road to the ski lift, amidst large hotels and opposite the skating rink and swimming pool.

The older centre of Alp d'Huez, with essential services for local residents, such as bakery and butchers, as well as tourist outlets. The Friday street market locates along the far end of this street.

The Friday market specialises in local produce, and some stalls show a picture of the farm and how the items are made. Local cheese was excellent!

800AHVillageChurch.jpg (120575 bytes)

A modern church, most striking in this setting, provides a focal point in the area just downslope of the hotel zone, next to the luge and indoor sports centre, and convenient for the village centre.

An outdoor pool in a grand setting. Alp d'Huez has a fine range of summer activities, to provide active entertainment for its guests.

Mini-golf is another feature of the summer season. To add to the facilities shown here are also ice skating, go-karting, grass-scooters, golf, clay-pigeon shooting and parascending! There are also a range of course available, including yoga.

Next to the swimming pool a game of boule is played out in hot afternoon sun.

Bungee thrills are another attraction!

800AHcycle.jpg (89303 bytes)

The Tour de France cycle race comes to Alp d'Huez every several years .. and attracts a considerable quantity of graffiti on the roads. Authorities tolerate this, so long as the stone walls are spared. The 21 bends from the valley floor up to the village are named after the last winners of this stage of the race; each time all the signs have to be moved up one .. and the top one removed!

The view to the valley floor show the climb that the cyclists have to undertake. Clearly visible is the gullying and slope failure of these extremely steep valley sides.
