Rivers Orwell and Stour, left, creates the Haven of sheltered
water and the ports of Harwich, Ipswich and Felixstowe. On the
right is the Opdr Las Palmas, freshly arrived from Cadiz and on
its way to Rotterdam. |

Loading and unloading take
place simultaneously, loading at the rear and unloading near the bow.
The vessel has arrived from Yantian, Guangdong and is continuing to
Hamburg.

The manoeuvre in full swing,
which is remarkably rapid, with a tug assisting. I was told the
high cost of tugs, at £1,000 each, has necessitated one, rather
than two, tugs assisting. |

The turn, in its own
length, is almost complete. Wind can be a problem of course, even with
bow-thrusters .. and can close the docks when the high containers
cranes can no longer work. |

The barge Sea Worker, above
left and the jack-up rig Titan 2 (seen above right) takes on the
components for a new wind turbine, then moves out to the site off
Clacton and installs them, returning to Harwich to pick up the
components for the next turbine.
As of 15 November 2009 38 of the 48 turbines have been
installed, the remaining 10 turbines will arrive directly from Esbjerg
in western Denmark. Each turbine comprises of 7 basic components, two
tower sections, the nacelle, the hub, and 3 blades. The total weight of
each of the 129m tall turbines is approximately 450 tonnes.
Electricity has been generated from the first two
of the 48 turbines that Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm will consist
of when full constructed. Each turbine is capable of generating 3.6
megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power over 2,500 homes each.
