This is an active meander on the River Severn near Abermule, cutting away at its flood plain on the outside of the bend.
Look how the fence has been undercut! An area of slumping can just be seen on the riverbank to the right.
The slip-off slope is made up of quite coarse material, in contrast with the fine tilth of the flood plain revealed in the river bluff side of the curve.
The eroding right bank has been reinforced with wire gabions filled with stone. this, and the other views, were taken from the main road, the A483, so erosion must be a special concern at this point.
